Glossary of Terms
-
SCADA
- Supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) equipment collects data from generators and provides a means of controlling power output from a centralized station in order to maintain proper grid function.
-
Stiffness
- The ability of a feeder line to maintain constant voltage during periods of high current. Lines that are not stiff are more prone to power quality problems that are associated with wind turbines and loads such as the starting of large motors.
-
Substation
- Part of an electricity transmission and distribution system where high voltage electricity (which is most efficient for travel over long distances) is transformed to lower voltage electricity before distribution to end users.
-
Subtransmission
- Subtransmission systems carry lower voltages than transmission systems, bringing power to regional distribution centers and to some large customers.
-
System Impact Study
- Identifies and details the effects to the electric system that would result from the interconnection of a generating facility.
