definition of community wind
Community Wind
In this section, we define community wind power development to mean locally owned projects, consisting of one or more utility-scale or a cluster of small turbines that are interconnected on either the customer or utility side of the meter.
Community Wind is:
- Locally Owned – One or more members of the local community have a financial stake in the project, other than through land lease payments, tax revenue, or other payments in lieu of taxes.
- ≤10 MW – Larger projects begin to encounter a set of development, financing, design, permitting and construction challenges that closely resemble those encountered by larger, commercial projects.
This section, therefore, is primarily tailored for individuals or communities pursuing development of a community-based wind project up to 10 MW in size. If considering a project whose scale is much smaller or larger than the range targeted in this website, please consult the excellent sources on the American Wind Energy Association's webpage for commercial wind development.
